Having trouble sleeping? How about problems with worry, feeling down, losing weight, quitting smoking, or changing other habits that may be interfering with your life and health?

Maintaining a healthy relationship between mind and body is crucial to mental and physical health. When something throws this relationship off, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to achieve life and health goals. The good news is that it is possible to overcome factors such as poor sleep that keep you from being as healthy as you’d like.

Excessive worry and fear, whether related to a specific trauma or as part of your outlook, can cause you to do a lot of unnecessary mental work. Sadness and irritability can keep you from accomplishing your goals or from enjoying things like you once did. We can talk about the specific types of thoughts and behaviors that keep you from being able to move beyond your anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or phobia.

Every person with insomnia is different, and you and I can discuss what makes your case unique as well as tailor treatment to your specific problem. I am currently the only board-certified Behavioral Sleep Medicine specialist in the state of Georgia and one of the few outside of academic settings in the Southeast. I offer Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia, which has been recommended as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. This means I can help you to fall and stay asleep through the night without the use of medication.

Quitting smoking and losing weight are two of the most difficult tasks a person can undertake. You and I will break the problem down to basic behaviors, beliefs, and desires that have kept your efforts from succeeding to this point. Then I will help you to develop and practice new skills that will continue to be effective long after we finish treatment. We can also address any underlying anxiety, depression, or other psychological issues that may have sabotaged your motivation in the past.

I am a licensed psychologist. My previous experience also includes three years as a health psychologist in a pulmonology/critical care/sleep medicine practice. Being in a medical environment allowed me to observe first-hand the benefits of making small changes toward larger goals. During that time, I worked with patients who suffered from anxiety, depression, and a wide range of sleep disorders, and I co-directed a smoking cessation clinic with one of my medical colleagues.

My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and mathematics from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, a Master of Science degree in psychology from the University of Georgia, and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia. I completed my predoctoral internship at the Central Arkansas Veterans´ Health Administration. I am a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the Georgia Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
